Book Tour

So it looks like I'll be doing a book tour right before that most magical time of year (Back to School Time!) come August. I'm a little nervous about this because I'm afraid I'll be sitting at an empty book store, twiddling my thumbs, looking like a loser, and begging anyone who walks in the door to please, please, please let me sign a book for them. It doesn't even have to be my book. Any book will do. Let me just sign something so I don't feel so pathetic. Please.

Meanwhile, my kids (who will be coming on this tour with me) will be running around the store like loonies. Clay and Brooklyn will be playing hide and seek, knocking over displays. Lexi will be drawing in the books and asking me, "How do you spell this?" every minute and a half. Jackson will bring me a stack 249 books with the question, "Can I get these, Mom?" Savannah will be sitting there looking bored and complaining that I won't get her a cell phone of her own and Austin will sneak over to Starbucks, buy some coffee and then, hyped up on caffeine, act even weirder than he already does. Sounds like a fun time, no?

Which brings me to my question. I really, really don't want to sit in an empty store like a dork, so tell me where you live so my publisher can come up with a plan that includes cities of folks who know who I am and who would love an evening out without kids enjoy getting to meet me or hear me speak.

Thank you!

You definitely have got to come to Montgomery, AL. We have a bunch of bookstores and I would even bring my two kids, who I leave at home most of the time when I go shopping. Good luck on your book tour!

By the way, I am glad to hear that I am not the only lame mother who won't get her child a cell phone.

Hope to see you here for a book signing.

Wooo Hoooo!! I'm reading this thinking, oh great, she'll NEVER come wayy up here to Canada!! And then... miracle of miracles... Another fan of yours lives in Winnipeg Manitoba!!! I would absolutely LOVE for you to come here and I would absolutely show up, by a book, and not leave until you and all your six kids have signed it!! (or drawn something in it :)

It would be hard for me to travel, since I'll have a new baby at home and they need to eat more than once a day :( But you never know right? maybe the whole family would pack up for a day (make that overnight) trip to Fargo or Minnesota. Still, if you come to Winnipeg... I'm on several parents groups and other groups here... I'll work my hardest to get you some fan following here!!

P.S. I know what you mean about the signing/ twiddling your thumbs worries! I don't know if I'll have book signings anywhere other than my home town, but I'm still nervous! I'd be a thousand times more nervous going to places where I don't know many people!!

Good luck!! Come to Winnipeg, Manitoba!!

I live in the Poconos, so it's probably not going to be a stop on your tour. However, we do have a Borders, and I'd love to come see you. There are a lot of moms in the area who would enjoy it as well, I'm sure. It's the Borders in Stroudsburg, PA. I also work down the street from a Barnes and Noble in Parsippany, NJ.

Can't wait for your book!

Hey Dawn!!

How exciting about your upcoming book tour!! What a wonderful way to jump-start your career as a writer and expose your kids to new places; not to mention the latter is a treasure trove of literature for your upcoming (or third??) book!! (Proposed title for book #3: "Do You Wanna Walk Home?!" LOL)

So, to answer your question, I live in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin...home of Leinenkugel's beer (**BRIBE!!** LOL) Eau Claire is about half an hour south of here, has a wonderful mall...Oakwood Mall...with a few different book stores in it, and I can think of a few places in the mall that would work very well for a book signing, not to mention just down the road and around the corner from the mall (less than a quarter mile) is a Borders bookstore with a little coffee shop in it. Nice area here...and comperable weather-wise to Chicago in August. The MOA in MN, and the first vote you got for Wausau, WI, are a very driveable hour away. If those are the closest you're able to get, then I'm THERE!! And I'm buying three of your books...one for me and one for two of my friends...and I'd really love for you to sign those ones, too!

In closing, I just want to thank you for helping me smile and relax every day, and for being so real! I'm also a less than perfect mom, and I always appreciate your candidness with the special Dawn Meehan twist you put on it! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Looking forward to coming face to face with my role model :o)

I know someone already mentioned Lexington, KY, but specifically ask for the Joseph-Beth bookstore. They do lots of book signings and are better set up for it than Barnes and Noble. I'm only 3 hours away and could surely arrange a doctor's appointment or something the day you'll be there. I'll have both kids in tow as well. Probably hubby too. Or, I have family in Nashville and Knoxville, TN, which both have Davis-Kidd Bookstores (the southern version of Joseph-Beth). I seriously doubt you'll be by yourself no matter where you are, though.

Anonymous said...

I'm actually surprised that people don't got to more book signings! We go to all our favorite author's signings and look forward to them weeks in advance! But then, we aren't so good at sports.....

My kids all want to grow up to be authors. I just want them to grow up!

Please consider the trek out to Boise! I traveled for 8 weeks alone along the Oregon trail with 4of my kids in a minivan and we went to St. Louis, and then to Washington DC, NY and even up to Omaha and toronto. Traveling with kids is definitely hard, but starting the day with a prayer and ending with prayer helped. So did duct tape.

Also, if you come to Boise, I will get a big welcoming committee at your book signing! I promise!

Is it ok if I link to your blog from mine? I get quite a few hits a day (around 100, which I bet is nothing compared to what you get! lol) so hopefully you'll get some more readers.
Send some over my way :P I'd like to one day have as many hits as you! It'd be great if it means people become more aware of cancer seeing as that's what mine is about!
Anyway, I've really rambled on here. It's past my bedtime.

Seeing the load of comments here I'm thinking that doing a poll that readers could click on to indicate where they are might been a good idea--but then again don't the "book people" (publisher, etc.) decide where to go for the tour or do they really let the author choose?

555 comments???? Wow! What is the record amount of comments you've gotten?

I live in a "too-small-a-town-to-bother-with". So those three would be great. I'd come see you there!

How about Brooklyn, NY? It wouldn't be very practical, since Manhattan, is the bigger and more central borough of New York, NY, but hey, it would be cute to meet your Brooklyn in Brooklyn...

I'm in the Longview/Tyler Texas area. I would love to come see you. However, if it is during the week I doubt I will make it. Come on a Saturday and I will be there and drag my family and friends too.

Houston. You should definitely come to Houston. Although, we spend quite a bit of time in Austin, TX too. I would go see you there, as well!

I live near a Barnes and Noble in Deptford, NJ. I am also just 30 mins away from Philadelphia! I would love to come get a book signed by you, and your book!

Come to Colorado Springs, Colorado!

OH yes, HOUSTON!! I'll be home visiting July/August timeframe! But if not during then, feel free to have your publisher send you to Okinawa, Japan! What a great time you'd have out here and I'd make sure tons of people came by to buy your book, get it signed and laugh their tooshies off at whatever speech you'd be willing to give!!!

I'm in Kansas City too and would come by for a book signing. I would even bring my kids to entertain yours. :)

Anywhere in central Florida would work for me! Come on down and play in the sand and sun, you know you want to! I'd love to get a signed book that proves I'm mildly off-balance because I want several more kids when my first is already driving me crazy at only 8 months old.

I'm in Baltimore! I'd love to come get a copy of your book and have you sign it!!

Okay, so I haven't sent you any cool news about where I live (even though I keep meaning to). But we live in Kendall Park, NJ (featured in Weird NJ) which is very close to Princeton. There is a Barnes & Noble in Princeton that always has kids music and storytime and book signings. We love them and I would be willing to bet that TONS of SAHMs would love to come meet you. Thanks again for "introducing" us to JuJu and Mimi and Haley and Michelle. I feel like I have met so many of God's angels right hear on Earth without leaving my living room. And all because your kids scammed some Pokemon cards! Isn't He amazing???

Oooo, Barrington area (or Deer Park). For you, I'd drive to Anderson's, provided I could find childcare but I'm selfish and want you closer than Naperville!

:::::::::: DC/BALTIMORE ::::::::::
-There's tons of bookstore options: strip-mall/outlet-mall/non-mall/mall(along with the huge A.M. free kiddie show); suburban/urban/rural
-The kids can really get something out of the DC tourism scene during this election year(visit the White House, enjoy free Smithsonian action like the zoo and air & space museum, do a drive by Duff's at Charm City Cakes, catch a game at Camden Yards, etc...)

Dallas, TX or anywhere close. I would love to buy your book and love to meet you! Thanks for the blog, I enjoy it very much. And simply can't wait for the book:-)

Another vote for the San Francisco Bay Area. Lighthouse Christian Bookstore in Dublin, CA; Barnes and Noble in Dublin or Borders in Pleasanton. I know you'll get a good turn out here! (And I can set my 2 boys up to play with your little guys in the kids dept.)

August? The month that I spend 2 weeks on the road August? Moving long distance August? Sigh.

Well, I'm from Sacramento, but I'll be spending 4 days in Phoenix, 4 near Dallas, and then be near Oklahoma City. Of course, I'm sure you'll be in each place when I'm not.

Still, it's sounds so exciting, and I'm sure you'll be amazed by the large crowds excited to meet you!

The Borders store here has a lot of famous authors come. You would fit right in - and I could babysit while you were mobbed by the hordes.

Surely you're coming to Fort Worth, since Mimi is here, right? If not, here's another vote for Fort Worth, Dallas, or somewhere in between!

Columbus, OH or surrounding area. I will be there for you to sign your book. What is better than Buckeye Country? :)

Safe travels and don't worry - my kids will have made a bigger mess while I'm standing in line to get my book signed by you than all yours would all day in the store....and I only have 2! (yet another reason to come to Columbus, you can get a lot of good material just by watching my boys in a book store!) ha!
